Recycling our waste is fundamental, citizens must insist on recycling as a way of life. When we talk about waste or plastic it’s funny because everybody seems to gravitate towards recycling as the best solution. It is an incredible process where you can make new stuff out of things that we have already created and disposed of, for example, you could use a plastic bottle and turn it into a pot to grow small plants and place them at your home or nearby places. Despite knowing all the changes that everyone can make by recycling the waste, what’s funny is that not everyone really knows how to recycle the waste. In this blog, we will be discussing how to improve recycling at home and their tips.
Recycling is great, you limit the amount of pollution out there in the world. You reduce the number of raw materials that need to be extracted from our planet. You use less energy and you are reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that are being emitted. Which helps tackle climate change.
Let’s first talk about the types of waste material, out of those what can be recycled, and then we discuss some tips that improve recycling.
Types of Waste Material and what to Recycle
Most papers are recyclable and are accepted in the mix at recycling centers. Include office and school paper, magazines, cardboard, scrap paper, unwanted mail, and paper board. Make sure to flatten cardboard boxes so that they can fit inside the recycle container and remove all plastic liners and bags from boxes, newspapers, and phone books before recycling. The cartons for milk, juice, and soup are also good for recycling, just give them a quick rinse. Do not include food-soiled paper, waxy paper, paper cup or paper towels and napkins, put these in the trash.
2. Metal | Tips for Recycling at Home
Metal cans, scrap metal, empty aerosol cans, and clean aluminum foil are recyclable. Be sure to rinse all containers and check that there is no pressure left in the aerosol cans, do not include wire hangers other metal wires, or sharp items that could pose a danger to workers handling the recyclables.
The only plastic that can be recycled are plastic bottles and tubs that are 6 ounces to 5 gallons in size. Rinse all containers and toss the lids. The rest of the plastic is not recyclable because they either have a shape or size that makes sorting difficult and made from a type of plastic that does not have a dependable market. The chasing arrow symbols actually do not indicate that an item can be recyclable in the recycling centers. Refer to the recycling instructions and act accordingly.
4. Glass | How to Improve Recycling at Home
Always keep glass separate from the other recyclables because glass breaks and causes problems at the sorting facilities and paper mills. Give containers a quick rinse and remove corks and lids, no need to peel labels. Do not include vases dishware, ceramics, window glass, drinking glasses, or light bulbs. These are the items that are not made from the type of glasses that bottles and jars are made of. Lastly never put hazardous material in the mixed recycling bins, These items require special handling.
Electronics goods recycling is a special part of the recycling industry aiming to prevent electrical items sent to landfills. This recycling is known as WEEE, which stands for Waste of Electrical and Electronic equipment recycling. At recycling centers, electrical equipment like computers, monitors, TVs, radios, mobile phones, and electrical tools are recycled.
Tips for Improving Recycling
1. Compost your Kitchen Waste
If you have a large garden at your home try composting your kitchen waste like eggshells, fruit skin & pulp, leftover greens, and every item that can decompose itself in the soil. If you do not have a garden yourself, find neighbors or a nearby park where your waste can be composted. Composting waste will make the soil more fertile for trees, gardens, and lawns, and help you manage your waste in a much effective manner.
2. Use Reusable bag instead of Plastic Ones | Tips for Recycling at home
Some states in India like Himachal Pradesh have banned the use of plastic bags. This is a great initiative to save mother nature and keep our surroundings clean. India generates 9.46 mv tone plastic waste annually, and one of the major reasons for this is the markets around us. They use plastic bags for every small or big packaging of items like vegetables, clothes, etc. Plastic is to be banned permanently from these types of markets all across the country then only we will be able to see a little change around our surroundings. We as responsible citizens should start taking action and can initiate by taking our own reusable bags in the market for any kind of purchase. These small changes will make a big difference.
3. Manage Collection | Tips for Recycling at home
Designating a proper collection center will make your recycling more easy and effective. You can designate different containers for different materials that can be recycled just like when you segregate clothes while washing them. It is preferably much easier because you don’t have to dry them up. Depending on your city, you might be able to get a free recycling bin for your home. If not, then as a responsible citizen you have to make your own recycling bin. It is very simple, just take 4-5 boxes and put them in the different sections of your home. Doing this will make you recycle things in a much effective manner.
4. Instead of Dispose – Donate
Lots of charities welcome your donation. They help you get rid of useful items that you just don’t want to make use of. Even if charities are not available in your area, it hardly matters. You just have to collect the objects and donate them to the needy people like giveaway the clothes that don’t fit or clothes that are torn, first stitch them, and then donate. It is much better than disposing of, as your unwanted material could be a dream for someone. Make a rule in your family and make everyone aware that nothing useable goes in the trash.
5. Encourage People to Recycle | How to improve Recycling at home
This could be the most effective tip amongst all the tips that we have discussed above. Educate people about recycling, this will let them know the benefits of recycling both socially and financially. Make recycling fun for kids, work on making recycling second nature for them by placing colored recycling bins around the house. They would be more than happy to get involved. When the people in your society start treating recycling as a daily routine just like breakfast or lunch, then only you would be able to create a better impact at your home and surroundings as well.
